Revealing defect-induced spin disorder in nanocrystalline Ni

چکیده

We combine magnetometry and magnetic small-angle neutron scattering to study the influence of microstructure on macroscopic properties a nanocrystalline Ni bulk sample, which was prepared by straining via high-pressure torsion (HPT). As seen magnetometry, mechanical deformation leads significant increase coercivity compared with nondeformed polycrystalline Ni. The data reveal spin-misalignment caused high density crystal defects inside were created severe plastic during sample preparation. corresponding correlation length, characterizes spatial magnetization fluctuations in real space, indicates an average defect size 11 nm, is smaller than crystallite 60 nm. In remanent state, strain fields around cause spin disorder surrounding ferromagnetic bulk, penetration depth \ensuremath{\sim}22 range amplitude systematically suppressed increasing external field. Our findings are supported illustrated micromagnetic simulations, for case nonmagnetic (holes) embedded phase, further highlight role localized perturbations defect-rich magnets such as HPT materials.

Disorder and Defect Healing in Graphene on Ni(111)

The structural evolution of graphene on Ni(111) is investigated as a function of growth temperature by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Low temperature (400−500 °C) growth results in a continuous but highly defective film with small ordered graphene domains and disordered domains composed of Stone−Wales (SW)-like defects. As the growth temperature is increased, the disordered domains shrink...

Hot Nanoindentation of Nanocrystalline Ni-W Alloys

High temperature nanoindentation experiments are conducted to assess the activation enthalpy for deformation of nanocrystalline Ni-W alloys, for grain sizes between 3 and 80 nm. Thermal softening becomes less pronounced at finer grain sizes, and the activation enthalpy has an apparent inflection at a grain size near ~10-20 nm, in the vicinity the Hall-Petch breakdown. This inflection is related...

Optically induced spin disorder in YVO3

Yttrium vanadate (YVO3) is an interesting material for studying optically induced phase transitions because it exhibits a rich variety of coupled structural and correlated electronic phases. We show that optical excitation effectively decouples spin and magnetic order and results in rapid spin melting within 4 ps while orbital order survives for longer than 100 ps. Solid to solid phase transiti...

Inverse grain-size effect on twinning in nanocrystalline Ni.

A long-standing controversy exists between molecular dynamics simulations and experiments on the twinning propensity of nanocrystalline (NC) face-centered-cubic metals. For example, three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations rarely observed twins in NC Ni, whereas experiments readily observed them. Here this discrepancy is resolved by experimental observation of an inverse grain-size effe...
